Dr. Allen Hershkowitz is an environmental scientist, strategic sustainability advisor, writer, and lecturer. For 26 years (1988 – 2016) he served as a Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Sports Business Journal listed him as one of the “50 Most Influential People in Sports Business,” and Worth magazine listed him as one of “The 60 Most Powerful People In Sports.” According to Green Sports Blog: “It is no exaggeration to say that Dr. Hershkowitz is the most consequential environmentalist in the history of North American sports.”
Dr. Hershkowitz serves as the Environmental Science Advisor to the New York Yankees and he helped create and guides the sustainability programs of numerous professional sports organizations, including MLB, the NBA, the USTA, the NHL, MLS and NASCAR. He currently serves as Chairman and Founding Director of Sport and Sustainability International, a global non-profit organization leveraging the influence of sport to promote sustainable communities. Prior, he co-founded and served as President of the Green Sports Alliance. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Wharton Business School’s International Global Environmental Leadership Program and is a Strategic Advisor to the International WELL Building Institute, the South Pole Group, the Sonoma County Agriculture Center’s Sustainability Advisory Board, among many other private sector and government organizations. He served as the first environmental advisor to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscars telecast from 2007 to 2015, and the Recording Academy’s GRAMMY Awards telecast from 2008 to 2014. Dr. Hershkowitz also co-founded the Broadway Green Alliance and the Environmental Paper Network.
Dr. Hershkowitz received the Townsend Harris Distinguished Alumni Medal from the City College of New York and he has received awards from the American Institute of Architects, The US EPA, Scenic Hudson, The Center for Discovery, NRDC, and numerous other organizations. He is author, co-author and editor of influential books, reports and articles, has appeared in television and radio shows in more than fifty countries, and is regularly quoted in newspapers, magazines, and journals.
